💎 Rare items : Retro video games: sealed Nintendo cartridges

The story

The most expensive video games are not scarce: they are best-sellers kept new and sealed, then graded by companies such as Wata or PSA. The absolute record is a sealed Super Mario Bros., sold for $3 million by Heritage Auctions in June 2026. By contrast, the second-hand games you find at a flea market (Game Boy Advance, DS, Wii) are generally worth a few euros to a few dozen euros.

Why these prices?

  • What sets the price is the sealed state and the grade: a game that cost $25 on release can be worth millions if it is new and graded 9.6 or higher.
  • Some packaging variants are even rarer: the glossy sticker of early 1986 on Super Mario Bros., or the word "Bros." placed on the left on Super Mario Bros. 3.
  • Opened cartridges, loose or played copies are worth far less: these records only apply to sealed copies.
  • The market has risen sharply since 2020 but remains volatile: these amounts are isolated sales, not a price index.
