The collectibles market in 2026
The Knight Frank Luxury Investment Index, the benchmark for valuable collections (art, watches, wine, coins…), closed 2025 slightly down 0.4%. Analysts see stabilisation after two years of declines, and the index is still up 38.6% over ten years. Buyers are active but more selective: they favour rarity, provenance and cultural value. Within it, watches gained 5.1% and Impressionist art 13.6% in 2025.

Rare vintage pieces are supported by Pokémon's 30th anniversary (27 February 2026). At the top, the Alpha Black Lotus sold for $3 million in April 2024.

The high end is rising, the mass market is shrinking. On 12 June 2026 a sealed Super Mario Bros. graded PSA 9.6 A++ sold for $3,000,000 at Heritage Auctions, an all-time record for a video game. By contrast, spending on new physical games fell to $1.5 billion in 2025 (Circana), and the market for graded sealed games cooled sharply after 2021, with a 2022 class action against Wata and Heritage alleging price manipulation.
- Record: $3,000,000 (12 June 2026)
- New physical games: $1.5bn in 2025

Coins and gold pieces
◆ Mixed
Gold coins first follow the metal price. According to the World Gold Council, gold averaged $4,506 an ounce in Q2 2026: 37% higher than a year earlier, but 8% below the Q1 record ($4,873). It hit a record $5,501 in January before falling back to about $3,994 at the end of June. Demand for investment bars and coins is steady year on year (307 tonnes in Q2). For an old collector coin, the rarity premium comes on top of the metal and does not track gold one-for-one.
- Gold, Q2 2026: $4,506/oz (+37% y/y, −8% q/q)
- Investment bars and coins: 307 t in Q2, steady
