In 1983 the British inventor Chris Wiggs turned a make-up compact into a tiny dollhouse for his daughter Kate. With his partner Chris Taylor (Origin Products) he licensed the idea to Bluebird Toys of Swindon: the first Polly Pocket toys reached stores in 1989. Mattel distributed the brand in the early 90s, bought Bluebird in 1998 and stopped the small original compacts in 2002. Bluebird sets from 1989 to 1998 are collectibles today.
