💎 Rare items : Collectible figures: Kenner Star Wars

The story

Among collectible figures, one toy towers over all the others: Kenner's rocket-firing Boba Fett prototype from 1979. Kenner had advertised a figure whose rocket launched from its back and offered it free to children who mailed in proofs of purchase from four other figures. The rocket was removed for safety reasons (choking hazard), the toy was never sold as designed, and most prototypes were reportedly destroyed or kept by Kenner employees. The surviving copies now break every toy record.

Why these prices?

  • These are never-released prototypes: very few exist, hence these amounts. An ordinary Star Wars figure, even mint on card, trades at completely different levels.
  • The record for the most expensive toy has been broken several times: $236,000 in 2022, $525,000 in 2024, then more than $1.3 million at Goldin.
  • Condition and grading matter: a figure graded by an organisation such as AFA is worth markedly more than an ungraded copy.
  • Original accessories, the blister pack and period paperwork (like Kenner's note explaining the removed rocket) add to the value.
